The Alcove
In the raised Alcove off the Kinstler Room are portraits of two former club presidents, the actors Dennis King and Roland Winters, along with actor Jason Robards. All of these portraits are by Everett Raymond Kinstler.
Death masks and life masks of eminent actors and playwrights are displayed here, along with other stage ephemera such as the helmet Walter Hampden wore as Cyrano. Sculpture in this room includes a bronze bust of José Ferrer.
The Alcove is where the original entrance to the house was situated, up a set of stairs from street level. The entrance was reconfigured and the front portico added in Stanford White's redesign for The Players in 1888. The Alcove provides access to the Balcony, the only outdoor space on Gramercy Park.
